Dr Joel Mawdsley is a consultant gastroenterologist with a special interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust where he is joint clinical lead for the IBD service. Prior to this he was a consultant for 10 years at West Middlesex and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation trust where again he was clinical lead for IBD. As a registrar he completed an MD examining the role of psychological stress in ulcerative colitis.
Overview: Approximately 1 in 350 people in the UK suffers with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A significant proportion of patients with this condition will continue to experience symptoms even when the inflammatory component of this disease is in remission due to IBS overlay or other contributing conditions. These patients frequently present to their GP who must decide if referral to secondary care is required or if simple treatments can be commenced in primary care.
• To recognise that many patients with IBD experience symptoms even when disease is well controlled
• To know the common associated conditions and have an approach to investigating these patients
• To have a treatment plan for these patients depending on the outcome of LX
